US JOURNAL about an incident in Gallup, involving Indian militant Casuse's abductionof Mayor Frankie Garcia, to draw attention to the plight of the local Navajos. Casuse, who unlike many of his peers at the U. of N.M., did not grow up on the reservation, but was raised among non-Indians, his father being a miner & his mother being Austrian. Only his recent participation in the University's Kiva Club, which he became president of, brought about his interest in Indian politics & rights In the abduction, the mayor was shot & Casuse was killed One of the reasons Casuse opposed Garcia was Garcia's co-ownership of the Navajo Inn, a liquor store a few hundred feet from the reservation. Garcia, at the same time had set up an alcoholicism rehabilitation program. He was also appointed to the U. of N.M. Board of Regents, which was widely opposed by students & Indians Garcia recently lost reelection, which came as a surprise since he was highly favored. Tells about the protests of the Indians following Casuee's death. The incident occurred in March.
