Position Description

THE DEPARTMENT

The Office of Sustainability & Environment (OSE) develops and implements citywide environmental policies and programs that propel our city toward a sustainable, equitable, and carbon neutral future. OSE is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. The sustainability and environmental fields have often failed to reflect the experiences and identities of people affected by their decisions and outcomes, including Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Immigrants, Refugees, People with Disabilities, and LGBTQ+ people. We strongly encourage people with these identities or from other marginalized communities to apply.

THE CONTEXT

OSE has been very successful at finding, applying for, and receiving grants. Currently, there are unprecedented federal and state climate funding available through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Inflation Reduction Act, Washington State Climate Commitment Act and other sources. The team at OSE thinks that they could do an even better job and their work could have an even greater impact in Seattle and the Puget Sound, if there was a “go to” person on their team to identify, research, and track federal and state funding opportunities and then manage the grant application to award process in a more proactive, coordinated, and systematic way.

Job Responsibilities

THE JOB

The search is on for a Strategic Grants Funding Advisor (Sunset position, currently funded until 3/15/26) to focus on climate and resilience and further Mayor Harrell’s One Seattle Climate Justice Agenda.  In this job, you will get to:

  • Build, develop, and expand your relationships with OSE leadership, staff, and legislative lead, citywide stakeholder groups, community partners, and state and federal agencies.
  • Create a strategic plan for identifying, researching, and determining which grants OSE will apply for and which partners other grants will be recommended to.
  • Facilitate cross-sector teams to develop high-impact funding proposals that advance climate and environmental justice.
  • Present recommendations to OSE and City leadership on climate funding strategies and granting opportunities.
  • Determine who will be assigned to or contracted to write the grant application.
  • Develop a tracking system or dashboard that tracks grants from identification to award.
  • Assist with grant administration, as needed.

To be successful in this role, you are committed to:

  • Climate, racial, and economic justice
  • Facilitating shared goals and priorities, collective action, and delivering outcomes in a political and dynamic environment
  • Collaborative, innovative, and strategic thinking and implementing systems across silos and connecting individual efforts to a greater vision

To be effective in the role, you have the skill and experience to engage in:

Stakeholder and Program Management – leading and implementing efficient systems for engaging internal and external partners and stakeholders, coordinating efforts, and managing and tracking the work, work quality, and timeliness of contractors, program staff, and subject matter experts.

Policy Tracking and Advocacy – staying current on climate-related legislation, policies, and budgetary actions and developing an awareness of the climate policy areas OSE is currently focused on, which includes buildings, transportation, food, and natural resources and then advocating for climate-related approaches that align with and meet the needs of community.

Project Management and Strategic Thinking –managing grant-related projects from inception to delivery and providing strategic thinking and recommendations on climate funding strategies at the intersection of climate, environment, and race.

Communication and Political Agility – the ability to synthesize complex information and distill it into digestible formats for all audiences, using your written and verbal communication skills for briefings, presentations, and relationship building/management as well as providing politically nuanced approaches to sensitive matters for senior officials.

Creating a Roadmap – evaluating the current state of this work and projects and where OSE would like to be and creating a plan to reach the goal whether there is a model to copy, or you need to innovate.
